Mikimoto and Chrome Hearts Give Pearls a Darker Kind of Romance

Pearls have spent centuries being asked to behave. Mikimoto and Chrome Hearts have other ideas.

The two brands have reunited for a second jewellery collection, bringing Mikimoto's immaculate Akoya pearls into contact with Chrome Hearts' crosses, safety pins and gothic hardware. This time, the setting is 22-karat yellow gold - warmer, richer and a little more antique in feeling than the white-gold palette of their first release.

It is still beautiful. It is simply beautiful with sharper edges.

Two Very Different Ideas Of Luxury

On paper, Mikimoto and Chrome Hearts occupy opposite ends of the jewellery box. Mikimoto is the Japanese house that helped define modern cultured-pearl jewellery: precision, luminosity and the particular quiet power of a perfect strand. Chrome Hearts built its world around heavy silver, biker iconography and the sort of crosses that tend to arrive with leather trousers.

Together, they make one another more interesting.

The pearls soften Chrome Hearts' familiar motifs without domesticating them. The gold crosses, meanwhile, interrupt all that polish just enough. Nothing feels added for shock value; the tension is built into the jewellery itself.

The five-piece collection includes a pearl-and-cross bracelet, a safety-pin brooch, two styles of drop earrings and the centrepiece: a 22-karat gold cross necklace set with Akoya pearls, natural diamonds and intricate floral-cross hardware.

That necklace is the clearest expression of the collaboration. At first glance, it has the elegance of an heirloom pearl strand. Then the gold cross comes into focus and the mood changes completely. It is romantic, but not delicate. Precious, but not polite.

The shift from white gold in the first collection to yellow gold here matters too. Against the cool lustre of the pearls, the deeper metal gives every piece a slightly old-world richness, as if it might have been discovered in a very glamorous locked drawer.
