Pharrell Looked at a Vans Authentic and Said: What If Louis Vuitton?

There is a specific kind of creative confidence required to take one of the most democratic shoes ever made and rebuild it in crocodile-embossed leather with a Louis Vuitton tab on the heel. Pharrell Williams has that confidence. He has had it for a while.

The Louis Vuitton Combi Skate Shoe is expected to land as part of the SS27 collection, and the images already circulating tell you everything you need to know about what Pharrell is doing at the house. The silhouette is unmistakably Vans Authentic — low profile, flat sole, wide lace box, that particular relaxed geometry that has lived on skate decks and art school corridors for decades. But the execution is entirely Louis Vuitton: deep red crocodile-embossed leather, chunky white laces, silver eyelets, a tan LV tab at the heel, and the house's monogram initials pressed into the insole.

Made in Italy. Of course.

Pharrell wore them himself — red pair, light wash LV monogram jeans, a powder blue zip-up hoodie, cap pulled low, sunglasses on — and the whole thing looked effortless in the way that only works when someone genuinely believes in what they are wearing. There is also a monogram canvas version visible in the same set of images, with multicolour LV flower charms threaded through the laces. Two directions. Same silhouette. Both make sense.

What Pharrell keeps doing at Vuitton is collapsing the distance between luxury and the things people actually love. Not in a pandering way. In a way that suggests he finds both genuinely interesting. The Combi is not a luxury sneaker that happens to look like a skate shoe. It is a skate shoe that has been taken seriously enough to be made in Italy in crocodile leather.
