Most storage wants to be invisible. Neutral fabric bins. Matching baskets. Tasteful little boxes that suggest the person who owns them has never mislaid a charger in her life.
This has four enormous studs on the lid and looks as though someone enlarged a translucent pink LEGO brick until it became furniture. Much better.
Officially, it is designed for toys and smaller LEGO pieces. Unofficially, I’m assigning it beauty products, hair accessories, cables, chargers and all the other small objects currently living without a fixed address.
The clear plastic is what makes it. In translucent candy pink, it feels less like children’s storage and more like a very cheerful design object. It’s also properly useful: 24cm square, 17cm high and fitted with a lift-off lid.
The studs allow the boxes to stack together, which is where things could escalate. One is a storage box; several in pink and blue begin to look like a small domestic art installation. Would I build an entire wall? I cannot honestly say the thought hasn’t crossed my mind.
And then there’s the LEGO Gallery Bookshelf: a giant wall-mounted brick with room for picture books, pencils and the small treasures children insist are essential. It comes in six colours, but the red is exactly right.
Put it with a few stacked translucent boxes and suddenly the playroom has a point of view. Playrooms should be chic too—and chic does not have to mean beige.
The pink box is my favourite, obviously, but the translucent blue is excellent too.
Verdict: I don’t want better storage habits. I want better-looking storage.
