100 stores. 20,000 products. One very clever deal.

The old department-store beauty hall never really disappeared. It migrated.

First to specialist chains. Then online. Then into the endless loop of TikTok recommendations, Google searches and trips into town to smell the thing properly.

Now Sephora and Marks & Spencer are putting those pieces back together.

M&S Has the Reach. Sephora Has the Heat.

From spring 2027, Sephora-branded spaces will begin appearing in selected M&S stores and online. The plan is to reach roughly 100 high streets and retail parks, supported by specialist beauty teams and national Click & Collect.

It is an unusually neat exchange. M&S gives Sephora a ready-made national footprint. Sephora gives M&S discovery, newness and an audience that may not normally visit for anything beyond food and knickers.

This Is What Replaces the Department Store

The most interesting retail businesses no longer try to own every category equally. They borrow authority.

M&S does not need to become a prestige-beauty expert from scratch. Sephora does not need to sign leases for another hundred standalone shops. Each supplies what the other lacks.

The result is less like a concession and more like a department store assembled from specialists.

Twenty Thousand Products Is Not the Point

Scale makes the announcement sound impressive. Curation will determine whether it actually feels good.

The strongest opportunity is not a giant catalogue of things already available elsewhere. It is a considered mix of established favourites, emerging names and Sephora exclusives—especially in towns that have never had easy access to them.

Discovery is the product. The shelves are simply where it happens.

And Then There Is Boots

Boots has reach, loyalty and enormous beauty recognition. John Lewis still has service and authority. Space NK has intimacy and taste.

Sephora at M&S combines a little of all three: national convenience, high-energy discovery and the reassurance of a retailer woven into British life. That makes it a serious competitor before a single counter has opened.

The Wonder Verdict

This partnership works because neither brand is pretending to be the other.

M&S remains dependable. Sephora remains exciting. Together, they may have found a way to make the beauty counter feel relevant again.

The high street does not need more space. It needs better reasons to visit.
